Loretta Galloway Craft, age 84, of Covington, died Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center in Clifton Forge. She was born May 26, 1942, in Clifton Forge, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late James W. Galloway and Maxine Richards Galloway; a sister, Virginia Ruth Simmons; a brother, Raymond Lee Galloway. Loretta was employed for twenty-two years at the Emmett Memorial Hospital, afterwards working at Alleghany Memorial Hospital as an Operating Room Tech and as a Nursing Assistant. She was a member of Falling Springs Rescue Squad for five years, and for the Red Cross as a CPR instructor for fourteen years and then as a Red Cross instructor. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Gerald E. “Heavy” Craft; a daughter, Dawn C. Downer and husband Michael of Covington, a son, Gerald A. and Melissa Craft of Denver, N.C.; sister-in-law, Barbara Campbell of Manquin; grand-daughters, Faith Downer Crozier and James, Laura Crippen and husband Jeff; grandsons, Travis Craft and Stephanie, Matthew Craft, seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Pearl Hosey Tucker. Age 69, of Covington gained her angel wings on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at her residence. She was born, August 24, 1956, in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late Kenneth and Mary Bowan Hosey; father and mother-in-law, Haven and Ada Tucker; seven siblings, Isabel, Lithia, and Teresa Hosey, Edith May, Christine Irvine, Mike and George Hosey. Surviving to mourn her loss is her husband of fifty-one years, Darrel W. Tucker of Covington, her daughter Crystal T. Marsh of Covington, her son, Darrel E. Tucker of Covington (Amanda); grandchildren, Kenny Tucker (Zoay), Ryan H. Phyllis Jean Bowen Tingler, age 81, of New Castle, died Thursday, June 25, 2026, at her residence. She was born, December 23, 1944, in Laurel, Maryland, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late Charles Bowen and Annie Brookman Bowen; a son, Paul Hinkle, two sisters, Bertha Elmore, Arletta Hinkle, three brothers, Rodney Bowen, Jerry Bowen, and Leon Bowen. For many years Phyllis was employed at Kountry Korner's as a clerk. During her past time, she enjoyed working in her yard, planting beautiful flowers, cooking for the family that she adored and loved. Surviving her loss is her husband, Virgil J. David Lee Arritt, Sr.

David Lee Arritt, Sr., 79, of Covington, died Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at his residence. He was born March 13, 1947 in Washington D.C., a son of the late Albert B. Arritt, Sr. and Elizabeth Jean Ryder Arritt. David graduated from Covington High School in 1965 and from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1969. Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, Hafford Lee “Doc” Arritt, Sr., he joined the family business and dedicated his career to Arritt Funeral Home. A passionate advocate for his profession, he served as President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association, as a board member of the International Order of the Golden Rule, and was twice named VFDA Funeral Director of the Year. In 2019, he was honored with the “Golden License” for 50 years of dedicated service as a licensed funeral director. He also earned the professional designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP). Active in his community, David served as President of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and was a longtime member of Covington Lodge #171 AF & AM and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. He generously gave his time helping organize the Covington Christmas Parade for many years and was instrumental in establishing local car shows, including CarFest and the Douthat Lake Run Car Show. Above all, David was a loving and devoted family man who cherished his role as husband, father, and PawPaw. Survivors include his wife of more than 40 years, Betsy Baker Arritt; his daughter, Beth Arritt of Springfield; five sons, David Arritt, Jr (Dagney Wills), Barry Fridley; Mark Fridley (Tara Myers), Wesley Arritt (Mandy), and Jonathan Arritt (Mandy), all of Covington; twelve grandchildren, B.J. Fridley (Jamie), Kari Goodwin (Jordan), Jake Fridley, Kyle Arritt, Hunter Fridley, Anna Grace Arritt, Abbie Fridley, Lewis Fridley, Landon Arritt, Eva Arritt, Maddi Wheeler (Jace), and Reese Myers; six great-grandchildren, Allison, Briana, K.J., Sam, Nathan, and Oaklynn; his brother, Albert B. Henry "Kevin" Fry

Henry “Kevin” Fry, of 207 Addison Patch Road, Hot Springs passed away peacefully at his home on June 20, 2026, after a brief illness. He was born, June 3, 1961, to the late Harold Lee Fry, Sr. and Ann Lillian Whiteside Fry in Hot Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, the late Patricia Stover; a brother-in-law, Billy Stover; and a sister-in-law, Annette Stover. Kevin graduated from Bath County High School and worked in the print shop at the Homestead and later pursued a career in carpentry and construction. He was known for his unwavering faith and dedication to his family as well as always willing to lend a helping hand. Kevin was known as Pawpaw to many children besides his grandchildren and could always be found in the bleachers for football games supporting his grandson Hunter or helping his granddaughter Erika with a project at her home and working on the farm. He left behind a wealth of knowledge to all those who were lucky enough to know him. Kevin was a dedicated member of the Hot Springs Fire Department for over twenty years and a former member of the Hot Springs Rescue Squad. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Cynthia Stover Fry of 44 years; his daughter, Sarah Church and husband, Lee of Hot Springs; his son, William Fry of Hot Springs; two grandchildren, Erika Church and boyfriend Ashton Larue of Buena Vista and Hunter Church of Hot Springs; two brothers, Lee Fry and wife Linda, Todd Fry and wife Lisa; his sister, Beth Neff and husband, Frankie; a father-in-law, Smokey Stover; a brother-in-law, Brian Stover; sister-in-law, Angel Stover; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends. John Blair Mitchell, Sr.

John Blair Mitchell Sr. May 2, 1940 – June 19, 2026 John Blair Mitchell Sr. was born in Roanoke, Virginia, to Charles Manning Mitchell and Anna Louise Bell Mitchell, and grew up alongside his cherished sister, Jean Mitchell Carpenter. For more than fifty years, he shared a devoted and joyful marriage with his beloved wife, Maude Wynn Myers Mitchell. John earned a notable place in local history as a member of the first graduating class of Cave Spring High School. He continued his education at the Virginia Military Institute, where he balanced the demands of cadet life with playing football and completing a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army and served in the elite Special Forces. Following his military service, John became the Resident Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the construction of the Gathright Dam—an ambitious project that resulted in the creation of Lake Moomaw in Alleghany County. In 1968, John co‑founded Hammond‑Mitchell, Inc. with the late Frank H. Hammond III. The heavy civil construction firm they built together continues to thrive today, a testament to their shared vision, work ethic, and leadership. Later in life, John embraced his love of the land, spending many fulfilling years engaged in farming and ranching across the landscapes of Virginia and Wyoming. John is survived by his wife, Maude Wynn Mitchell; his children, Laura Lee MacDougall (Dr. James Howard MacDougall) and John Blair Mitchell, Jr. (Noreen Mitchell); and four grandchildren: Ashby Scott McGarry Dauber (Ben Dauber), Thomas John “Jack” McGarry (Kelly McCafferty McGarry), McKenna Mitchell Reed (John Reed), and John Blair “Mitch” Mitchell III. He is also survived by three great‑grandchildren—Wynn Scott Dauber, Murphy Jane Reed, and JR Reed—who will carry his memory forward. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. Ronald Lee Paxton

Ronald Lee Paxton, 59, of Covington, died Thursday, June 18, 2026 at his residence. He was born October 9, 1966, a son of the late Howard “Junie” Paxton, Jr. and Brenda Lockhart Paxton. Ronnie served 25 years with the Clifton Forge Police Department, retiring as Lieutenant in charge of investigations. He was also a retired member of Boiling Springs Fire and Rescue, where he served in many capacities. Following his retirement, he went to work for Garten Trucking. Surviving is his wife, Sandra Thompson Paxton of Covington; a son, Ben (Keryston) Paxton of Covington; one daughter, Samantha (Jackson) Paxton-Clayton of Radford; three grandchildren, Abel Stanley, Layne Mohler, and Avadella Stanley-Paxton; one brother, Dwaine Paxton of Covington; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and one brother-in-law, A.J. Nellie Selleck Trivitt

With profound sadness and endless love, we announce the passing of Nellie Maxine Trivitt (Selleck) , who entered her eternal rest on June 11, 2026. She was born on May 12, 1957, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Nellie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose kindness, strength, and devotion to her family touched countless lives. Nellie was the daughter of the late Jessie R. Selleck and Dora Lee Hensley Selleck. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, the late Betty Deel, Velma Graham, and Phyllis "Doodle" Selleck; and her beloved nieces, Joni St. Pierre and Loretta Dunsmore. A devoted mother and grandmother, Nellie dedicated her life to caring for those she loved. She was known for her warm heart, infectious smile, and vibrant personality. She never met a stranger and could make anyone feel welcome. She loved spending time with family and friends, sharing laughter, dancing, and creating memories that will be cherished forever. Her grandchildren were among her greatest joys, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Also, left to mourn her loss are countless nieces and nephews and other family members. Curtis Autry Broughfman, Sr., age 81, of Covington, died Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at his residence. He was born November 24, 1944, in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Earl C. Broughfman, Sr. and Nellie Staton Broughfman. He was also preceded in death by a long-time companion, Marilyn Tucker; two sons, Curtis Broughfman, Jr. and Edward Campbell; and two sisters, Shirley Perkins and Daisy Durham. Marsha Irvin Sargent, age 62, of Covington, passed away peacefully at her home, Monday, June 1, 2026. She was born July 31, 1964, in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late Virginia Thompson Biggs and Boyd C. Irvin. Steven Richard Humphries, age 67, of Covington, died May 31, 2026, at his residence. He was born August 24, 1958, and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Estus Cleveland Humphries, Jr. and Sylvia Jean Olley Newsome; a sister, Carol Farley. Steven was employed for many years at Norfolk Southern Railway Company as a Machinist. He was an avid sports fan who especially loved golf, University of Virginia athletics, and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. Cynthia Kathryn Sawyer

Cynthia Kathryn Sawyer, 64, of Clifton Forge, died Monday, May 25, 2026 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. She was born January 20, 1962 in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of the late Thomas Sawyer, Sr. and Mary Kathryn Deering Sawyer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Sawyer, Jr. She worked for many years as an LPN, specializing in geriatric care and bringing comfort and kindness to her patients. In her personal time, she found joy in simple pleasures — caring for animals, coloring, making soap and candles, and playing Farmville. Above all, she cherished spending time with her grandchildren, whom she lovingly called her “Ladybug” and “Frog.” Survivors include her daughter, Lucinda Sawyer (Michael Riddle); grandchildren, Aeryn and Jacob; her sister, Elizabeth Sawyer, all of Clifton Forge; one brother, Kevin Sawyer of Rocky Mount; several nieces and nephews; and several more “adopted” sons and daughters. Jean Reid Broughman

Jean Reid Broughman, formerly of Clifton Forge, transitioned peacefully to heaven on May 22, 2026, at Bridgewater Retirement Home in Bridgewater, Virginia. Jean was born in Covington, Virginia, in 1933 to Lovie and Lawrence Reid, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Philip Riley, Claude Wolfe, and Hansford “Tater” Broughman; her daughter-in-law, Libby Riley; and her grandson, Lucas Riley. In 2012, Jean moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to live with her daughter and remained close to the family she cherished so deeply. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Linda (Carl) Roy of Harrisonburg, Paul “Buzzy” Riley of Covington, and Charles Wolfe of Avignon, France, as well as her devoted stepdaughter, Robin Hall of Covington. Jean was a proud grandmother to Erin Augustine (Matthew) of Bedford, Celia Meade (Bryan Lewis) of Fincastle, Kylene (David) Smith of Salem, and Katie Long (Cody) of Longdale. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Annabelle Byrd, Tyler Meade, Reagan Meade, Callie Byrd, Brielle Smith, Kenzie Cline, and Cohen Long. Jean’s faith was the foundation of her life. She loved the Lord deeply and was a devoted member of Granbery United Methodist Church, Walton Memorial Methodist Church, and Epworth Methodist Church. During her time at Epworth, she faithfully served as church treasurer and found great joy in teaching and caring for young children. Jean will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, steadfast faith, and deep love for her family, friends, and caretakers at Bridgewater Retirement Home. Jackson Leigh Bennett, 18, passed away on May 21,2026, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital, leaving behind a heartbroken family and countless people who loved them deeply. Though their life was far too short, the love, laughter, and light they brought into this world will never be forgotten. Jackson had a beautiful spirit and was known for their kindness, smile, humor, strength, creativity, compassion. They touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know them. Jackson was preceded in death by late grandmothers, Leigh Bennett and Tammy Bennett. Jackson grew up in Fredericksburg, VA and Jackson graduated from Allegany High School in 2026; loving art, music, gaming, spending time with family and friends. They dreamed big, loved deeply, and had a way of making others feel special simply by being themselves. Their presence brought comfort, joy, and unforgettable memories that will forever be treasured. They are survived by their loving family, including Parents: Tara Bennett (David Burhenn) of Covington and Michael Bennett (Alexis Sawyer) of Fredericksburg, VA, Siblings: Elizabeth Richardson, Danni Bennett; a stepbrother, Daniel Frye; Step brother Remington Burhen: Maternal Grandparents: Boyd Richardson and Debra Richardson; Paternal Grandparents, Daniel Bennett, MM Uncles: Joshua Richardson and Frankie Richardson; along with many friends and relatives who will carry their memory in their hearts forever. Mary Sue Huffman Fox

Mary Sue Huffman Fox, 85, of Covington, died Monday, May 19, 2026 at her residence. Mary Sue was born April 12, 1941, in Ronceverte, WV to the late Rachel Huffman. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Fox; a daughter, Debbie Bartley; and two sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Austin of Covington; two granddaughters, Kayla Maynard and Jessica Perdue; one grandson, Justin (Maggie) Perdue; four great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters. Barbara Sue Smith

Barbara Sue Miller Smith, 78, of Fincastle, Virginia, died Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026, at Berkshire Health & Rehabilitation Center in Vinton. She was born June 21, 1947, in Beckley, WV, the daughter of the late Leiton E. Miller II and Geraldine Smith. She attended CommUnity Church in Buchanan. Survivors include a daughter, Jill Brucene Smith of Roanoke, VA; three sisters, Cynthia Pauley of Moundsville, WV, Roberta Offenbacker of Chillicothe, OH, and Jannelle Miller of Beckley, WV; and two brothers, Leiton E. Miller III of Charleston, WV, and Dennis L. Miller of Beckley, WV. A graveside service will be held on May 18, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Alleghany Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating, The family will receive friends before the service from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Arritt’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park. Johnny Allen Rogers

Johnny Allen Rogers, age 61, of Low Moor, passed away, Sunday, May 3, 2026 at the Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. He was born June 3, 1964 in Alleghany County; and is survived by his wife Valerie Rogers of Low Moor; his children Wesley Rogers and wife Ashley of Michigan, Miranda Malcom Shannon of Covington, Savannah Malcom and fiancé Phillip McCoy of Low Moor; Hanna Malcom and Christopher Rogers of Low Moor; along with his nine grandchildren, Jonathan Rogers, Jace Rogers, Jonah Rogers, Cason Shannon, Esme Shannon, Sebastian Shannon, Emmani Shannon, Ca’hiem McCoy. Also left to mourn his loss are his siblings, Gary Rogers and wife Tammy of Clifton Forge, Marsha Rogers and fiancé Ralph Loan of Low Moor, Rocky Rogers of Richmond, Christy Huggins of South Carolina; many nieces and nephews; a close friend Matt Depriest. Johnny was reunited in death by his parents, the late Bertha Bassett Rogers and Curts Rogers; his brother David Rogers; two sisters, Laura Rogers Carico (Sugar), Scarlett Rogers (Angie); numerous other family members; his best friends, Charles Moore (Sweet Pea) and Thomas Williams (Tommy). He enjoyed the outdoors and especially fishing. He will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and friends. His memory will be etched in the hearts of all who knew him forever. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Ayers officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Carl Payton Keyser, Jr.

Carl Payton Keyser, Jr., 33, of Clifton Forge died Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond. He was born September 6, 1992 in Alleghany County, a son of Carl P. Keyser, Sr. and Stacey Doyle Nuckles. Carl loved the outdoors and all things sports. He was an avid Houston Rockets fan. He was a former employee of Hammond-Mitchell in Covington. Survivors include his mother, Stacey Doyle Nuckles of Clifton Forge; his father, Carl P. (Crissy) Keyser, Sr. of Staunton; one daughter, Adeline Keyser; a son, Robert Keyser; his siblings, Corey (Angie) Doyle Kayla (Ian Santiago) Keyser, Alex (Dakota Ayers) Keyser, and Cody Nuckles, grandmother Viginia Doyle, all of Covington; Steven Redmon and Sam Redmon, who were raised as brothers; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins including Tracey Doyle and Matthew Lindsay, both of Covington; and the mother of his children, Sarah Arrington of Hot Springs.
